Unit, the World Currency

Unit, the World Currency was the Final Project presented in 2010 at EINA, Centre Universitari de Disseny i Art de Barcelona (UAB). Unit was a utopian single currency for all countries, issued by the World Bank and intended to be used by the entire population of the planet.

The aim was to design a currency that would accept identification from all over the world. With this proposal, a clean, neutral graphic image was used that was not specifically associated with any culture, religion or flag. This was accompanied by the Helvetica typeface and a repertoire of pictograms constituting an international graphic code that could be understood by all.

The same graphics and narrative were adopted for both coins and banknotes. Its concept was based on the subject matter of the universe, ranging from the representation of the smallest objects to infinity. The 1 unit coin, represented by the Earth, was the intermediary between the six coins and the six banknotes. The twelve elements were created on the basis of this, including the symbol. The coins were made of copper, silver and Nordic gold and the notes of polypropylene.
